viaCycle emerged from the Sustainable Design and Manufacturing Program at Georgia Tech. Koji Intlekofer and his teammates, most of whom graduate students at the school, wanted to adopt bikesharing on campus but found existing systems too expensive for universities or even small cities to implement. Their solution - a GPS- and wireless communication-equipped electronic locking system on each bike, which would eliminate the need for dedicated kiosks used in bikeshare programs pioneered in Paris and spreading to major metropolitan cities such as London and Shanghai.
